The Institute for Textile Research and Industrial Cooperation of Terrassa (INTEXTER) is an academic unit of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia created in 1962. The main objectives of the institute are to promote research in the textile and related sectors, as well as the industrial cooperation by conducting tests, standardization, homologation and certification works. The training of researchers is another objective of the Institute and for this reason is part of the academic management of the Interdepartmental Doctoral Program for Textile and Paper Engineering, as well as the Doctoral Program for Environmental Engineering.

INTEXTER participates in R&D projects with local, national and European public funding, or in agreement with private companies. In addition, the Institute is a member of the UPC Center for Technological Innovation (CIT-UPC), is recognized as a TECNIO Developer Center of the Agency for the Competitiveness of Business of the Generalitat de Catalunya and is part of the International Textile Transfer Network (TEXTRANET).

The Environmental Pollution Control laboratory of INTEXTER, coordinated by the research group ENMA - Environmental Engineering, has extensive experience in the study of several industrial wastewater treatments using clean technologies, in order to reuse the treated effluents and raw materials in new production processes. On the other hand, it also carries out energy optimization studies to reduce the environmental impact of the treatment technologies.


Some of the research lines of the ENMA group are: 

  1. Design of physicochemical and biological treatments combined with new technologies.
  2. Treatment of industrial water with membrane bioreactors (MBR).
  3. Nanofiltration and microfiltration with organic membranes. Reuse of effluents and raw materials.
  4. Electrochemical treatment for the removal of organic pollutants. Reuse of salts and effluents.
  5. Decontamination of water by UV irradiation.
  6. New purification technologies: photoelectrochemistry, enzymes; photocatalysis (TiO2 nanoparticles) combined with membranes.
  7. Recovery of natural waste as adsorbents for organic pollutants.
  8. Determination of emerging pollutants in wastewater and textile articles.
  9. Ecotoxicological parameters and biodegradability of chemical products.
  10. Recovery of waste from the Electric Vehicle, to optimize the energy supply necessary for the application of some purification technologies.
